Jeff George to start in Oakland

Jeff George

According to Raiders’ wide receiver Jerry Porter, Jeff George will be the starting quarterback for Oakland in week 1 against the Detroit Lions.

Porter was joking, of course. But the fact of the matter is that no one but Kiffin and the Raiders know who is going to start at QB for Oakland yet.

ESPN’s John Clayton and NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reported that Josh McCown will be the starter in week 1 due to his experience with the playbook.

Some San Francisco papers/blogs reported that Daunte Culpepper appeared to be the starter due to his body language in practice this week.

However, in practice this week, it has been reported by several sources (Schefter and Jeremy Green of ESPN, among others) that McCown has been taking all the snaps with the Oakland first team, while Culpepper has been leading the scout team.

All signs point to McCown winning the job, but he likely loses it in a few weeks.

Update on the Raiders’ quarterback situation

According to SFGate.com, Daunte Culpepper is rumored to be the starting quarterback for Oakland against Detroit in week 1.

Was the great John Clayton wrong? We should know more about this situation tomorrow …

Report: McCown the starter in Oakland

ESPN’s John Clayton reported on Sportscenter today that Josh McCown will the Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback week 1 against Detroit.

That means despite an impressive preseason, Daunte Culpepper will start the season on the bench.

Clayton said that coach Lane Kiffin had a conversation with both players today and informed them of his decision. Kiffin is not expected to make a public announcement until Wednesday, according to Clayton.

Fantasy Spin:

Culpepper was flying somewhat under-the-radar coming into the season after last year’s abysmal performance. He was a popular waiver wire addition the last few weeks, but for now it looks as if he will remain on the bench — or sent back to the free agent pool — in most fantasy leagues.
