Report: McCown the starter in Oakland

ESPN’s John Clayton reported on Sportscenter today that Josh McCown will the Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback week 1 against Detroit.

That means despite an impressive preseason, Daunte Culpepper will start the season on the bench.

Clayton said that coach Lane Kiffin had a conversation with both players today and informed them of his decision. Kiffin is not expected to make a public announcement until Wednesday, according to Clayton.

Fantasy Spin:

Culpepper was flying somewhat under-the-radar coming into the season after last year’s abysmal performance. He was a popular waiver wire addition the last few weeks, but for now it looks as if he will remain on the bench — or sent back to the free agent pool — in most fantasy leagues.

  1. Surprising move…Clayton has been wrong before but maybe this is Kiffin’s way of making a statement. Either way I believe Culpepper will start more games and be the more valuable fantasy contributor this season.

    Nice scoop though!

  2. Actually, Clayton said that – based on body language – McCown APPEARS to be the starter.

The SF chronicle is contradicting that, saying that – based on body language – Culpepper appears to be the starter.
